Here’s the reality: if we were solidly entrenched in third place in the division, there would be nowhere near as much complaining about the slumps our rookies have been in. At that point most people would be looking at this season as what it’s been all along — a good second year of the rebuild. They absolutely should not extend him until we see if/how he bounces back. He’s still under team control for another year, so there will be an opportunity to revisit the extension then. If the season gets canceled entirely (as opposed to shortened or pushed back) then you cross that bridge when you come to it. It’s not like teams are going to be lining up to offer him a huge contract.
