Literally, it translates to “three swings.” In a baseball context, this term is used for a strikeout, regardless of whether the third strike was a swing or a “called” strike where the batter watched the ball pass. Interestingly, if a player strikes out looking (without swinging), it is still called a sanshin. (気になって直訳を調べてみた。日本語でこの言葉を分解すると、「三（さん）」は「3」、「振（しん）」は「スイング・振る」という意味。文字通り訳すと「3回のスイング」になる。野球の文脈では、3ストライク目がスイングであれ、バッターが見逃した「コールドストライク」であれ、三振を指す言葉として使われる。興味深いことに、見逃し三振でも「三振（さんしん）」と呼ばれる)
To add on, swinging strikeout is karaburi sanshin 空振り三振 (補足すると、空振り三振は karaburi sanshin 空振り三振と言う)

To add on further, the “kara” in “karaburi” means air, so they’re swinging at air. “Karaburi” is basically “swing and miss.” (さらに補足すると、「空振り」の「空（から）」は「空気」を意味するから、つまり空気をスイングしてる感じ。「空振り」は基本的に「スイング・アンド・ミス」のこと)

Not sure how long the Dodgers have been doing this, but I also enjoy watching when the Lakers do “Learning with Rui” and either Spanish or Slovenian with Luka. It’s great to see the camaraderie between the players genuinely trying to learn languages or customs from their teammates.
