Some of us knew it. We saw the progress every outing. Hard to not get hit when you working on mechanics, pitch sequence, new slider, then work on a new splitter, sinker all of that and stay the course.Acknowledgement to the coaching staff for telling him don’t focus on runs focus on what you are working on. It would have been easy to destroy his confidence but good on him for buying in.

Yes, he did he began working on them and you can tell it’s a new splitter cause it’s high 80’s to low 90s and they said he had trouble with the 500 RPM splitter to land it. This splitter is 1000 RPM and is a traditional splitter that he uses to land in the strike zone more

His issue last season was that he had a 2 pitch mix, a flat fastball that was good at 100 and very hittable at 96, and a splitter that’s like the demon child of a knuckleball and a slider. Hitters would sit fastball because they could do lots of damage against it while he couldn’t throw the splitter consistently for a strike.In today’s game he was showing four pitches: the same fastball, a regular slider he’s worked on that’s nothing special but he can spot pretty well, and two versions of his splitter, the split and the forkball. The forkball is the crazy good pitch we used to call a splitter, it’s a great out pitch when he’s ahead in the count. The new split is a bit harder and has less movement, which means he can more consistently land it for a strike.
This allows him to attack hitters with three initial options (fastball, slider, split) and to get the strike out primarily with the forkball, or freeze them as they expect a forkball but instead get one of the other three.
It’s amazing progress for him!

Well he had more of a forkball than a splitter. And learning a splitter gives him another breaking pitch that looks more like his fastball, rather than his slower forkball. His forkball has a bit of a knucklebreak to it as it can move side to side, while the splitter is 5mph faster, but looks closer to his fastball.I think it’s good to know as many pitches as possible. Ohtani can throw 7, same with Yamamoto. So Roki having 4 pitches only helps him from where he was last year (throwing only 2, rarely 3).
