Dodgers W! Sweep!! Shohei Ohtani DOMINATED the Mets today! 6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 2 BB, 95 pitches with 63 strikes!! Today was Jackie Robinson Day, and his two grandchildren threw out the first pitch. Replica jerseys were also given out to fans at the stadium.
Shohei started on the mound. In the top of the first, he mixed his fastball and curve well to get a swinging strikeout. He looked like he was still feeling things out early. With strong defense from Andy Pages and a flyout, he retired the side.
In the bottom of the first, the Dodgers faced Clay Holmes. Shohei was not in the lineup as a hitter, so Tucker led off and flied out after a full count. Freddie Freeman followed and hit a single off a changeup. Will Smith flied out to right for the second out, and Teoscar Hernández also flied out to end the inning.
In the top of the second, Shohei faced Bichette, who homered off him in the World Series, and got him to ground out. Then he painted a fastball for a called strikeout, and finished the inning with a flyout using his sinker.
In the bottom of the second, Max Muncy grounded out. Andy Pages followed with a groundout as well. Dalton Rushing then hit a single down the first base line. Next up was Hyeseong Kim, who hit a 2 run home run for his first of the season to make it 2 to 0.
In the top of the third, Shohei allowed his first extra base hit with a double, but came back with a swinging strikeout on a fastball. He then struck out Lindor swinging with another fastball, both players smiling afterward.
In the fourth, Shohei struck out a right handed batter with a curveball, then got a groundout and covered first base himself for the second out. He finished the inning with a groundout using his sinker.
In the bottom of the fourth, Muncy struck out. Pages reached on a hit by pitch. Rushing advanced the runner with a wild pitch situation but struck out swinging. Kim also struck out swinging on a changeup to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Shohei issued his first walk as his sweeper missed. After allowing a hit, Teoscar made a nice play on a short hop to hold the runner. Shohei then gave up another walk and a double, allowing one run to score, but got a flyout to escape the inning. Score 2 to 1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Freeland grounded out, Tucker flied out, and Freddie worked a walk after battling full count. Will Smith lined out to end the inning.
In the sixth, Shohei struck out the first batter swinging with a fastball. He then struck out the next batter with a curveball for his ninth strikeout, and finished the inning by striking out another batter with a splitter for his tenth strikeout. Three straight strikeouts!!
In the bottom of the sixth, Teoscar Hernández hit a solo home run for an important insurance run to make it 3 to 1.
In the seventh, Blake Treinen came in and got a groundout. He allowed a double, then got another groundout to move the runner to third, and finished the inning with a swinging strikeout on a sweeper.
In the eighth, the Dodgers got through the inning scoreless with solid defense including plays by Kim.
In the bottom of the ninth, Teoscar reached base with hustle. Muncy walked, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Pages then singled to load the bases. Dalton Rushing hit his first career grand slam to make it 7 to 1!! Later, with two outs, Tucker hit his second home run to make it 8 to 1. Freddie added a double after that.
In the top of the ninth, Kyle Hurt, returning from Tommy John surgery, took the mound. He struck out the first batter with a 97 MPH fastball. After allowing a hit and a hit by pitch, he struck out the next batter for two outs. He gave up a run on a hit to make it 8 to 2, but finished the game with a swinging strikeout on a changeup. Dodgers win!!
