The team would have to forfeit the DH and the pitcher’s spot would bat if not pinch hit for each time they came up
Gotcha. Thanks!
Can you explain this with a hypothetical situation?
Ohtani starts the game as DH, Blake Snell or someone is starting pitcher. In the 6th inning, Ohtani takes over as a relief pitcher, for whatever reason. He can pitch as long as he likes and he keeps his spot in the batting order, except now he’s a pitcher, not a DH. In the 7th inning, he comes up to bat. After he bats, he’s relieved by another pitcher, say Tanner Scott. Ohtani is now out of the game completely. When the batting order comes up again to that spot, Tanner Scott will have to bat. Or be replaced by a pinch hitter. The team doesn’t have a DH anymore.
He could stay in the game after pitching if he then switches to be like the right fielder
This is true - there’s always the double switch. I think Ohtani did that a bit in Japan and maybe on the Angels, but if he did it was pretty infrequent.
But then the RF is out of the game. Ohtani is still in the BO but as the position player. Not as the DH. Thus the pitcher who comes in to relieve Ohtani has to bat.
The DH joining the field forfeits the DH spot so now you would have Ohtani the pitcher batting first in the order. Assuming Ohtani doesn’t pitch the rest of the game, whoever comes in to pitch would have to replace one of the 9 hitters in the batting order because there is no longer the DH. The new pitcher doesn’t necessarily have to bat first in Ohtani’s spot. You can use a double switch just like the NL frequently used before getting the DH. The new pitcher could (hypothetically) take RF Alex Call’s 8 spot in the order, Ohtani could play RF and continue batting first, while Call is out of the game permanently because the pitcher is now batting 8th in the order in his spot. Each subsequent pitcher would either have to replace the current pitcher in the batting order, or another double switch would have to be used. When whatever spot in the order that the pitcher is in comes up on offense, that pitcher either has to hit or be pinched hit for.
RemindMe! During the playoffs as I bet this scenario will come to fruition.
There’s no shot this happens
they’ve been on 2 world series runs with ohtani and it’s not yet happened. why would it happen during this playoff run?

The pitcher who came in for him would have to hit (not gonna happen) or they would have to pinch hit for that pitcher
The Hypothetical situation would be the way the NL had played for its existence since 21.Either let the pitchers hit or pinch hit for them.
Let’s say Yamamoto is pitching and they have Teo batting DH in the 4th position. Let say Ohtani comes in the 8th. And bats 4th. Like say Diaz comes in the 9th and bats around to the 4th position, Diaz would have to hit or they need someone to PH other than Ohtani. Now this same scenario where Yamamoto starts and Ohtani DH in the 4th position. When he comes in, in the 8th inning he can bat until Diaz gets subbed into pitch the 9th. Then Diaz or a new PH would need to bat. That’s why Ohtani needs to start. The starting DH does not need to come out when pitchers change. If a pitcher bats for the DH then when that pitcher comes out, the DH needs to switch.
If ohtani starts as the dh and they bring him in to pitch relief in the 6th inning and then relieve him in the 7th. From that point on your relief pitchers are now batting.
When he leaves the game as a reliever, he leaves the game as a DH
He could switch to a position in the field after pitching But the pitchers spot would still bat without a DH and some other hitter would have to leave the game
Just use him as an opener for 1-3 innings
This is exactly why he started Game 7 last year.
except definitely pull him after 2 innings if he looks visibly exhausted out there like in that game.
Don’t worry he is not going to pitch in relief for the Dodgers, because of the logistics of warming up .
That’s interesting. Hadn’t factored that in. Thanks!
The Ohtani rule basically doesn’t exist if he pitches relief. It only applies when someone starts a game as starting pitcher AND DH. If Ohtani took over as a relief pitcher at any point, he keeps his spot in the batting order, but he’s not batting as a pitcher. Which means if he gets relieved, the new pitcher takes his spot. Which would typically mean they get pinch hit for next time they’re up.
he can close but when he’s taken off the mound he’s taken off the batting line up too
What I never understood was why it matters if he’s coming in in like the 9th inning. Say he’s our new closer. If he blows the save and has to leave the game after he’s done pitching because it goes to extra innings or something, well, don’t blow the save then. If you can’t then maybe relief isn’t an option.
Exactly this, while I get the warming up issue logistically (is there a tunnel? Would the batting cages underneath the stadium suffice? I’m out of the loop on that stuff) if he can do exactly what you said, there is a decent amount of value in having him as a RP too so… if healthy, why not?
It’s invalid. That’s why you’ll never see him as a reliever. Only as a starter or an
