When Shohei wins a CY Young I think the GOAT debate will end. It’s the only accolade he doesn’t have and there will be no reason to say any other player in MLB history is better than Shohei Ohtani. I think he is the greatest right now, but some people are adamant that it’s still Babe Ruth.

Yeah I think this season already settles it. The Cy Young is super variable, sometimes you are insane but someone else was more insane. And it has been a stupid award for a very long time when voters prioritized W/L more. “Greatness” tests are often partially eye tests, and Ohtani is clearly the greatest baseball player of all time, even if he retired tomorrow. He would be most team’s best hitter. He could be most team’s best pitcher.

Probably going to catch hell for this but Ohtani-excluded, I don’t have Babe as the GOAT. IMO the GOAT is Willie Mays. 156 WAR, 660 HR while maintaining a career .301 average. Absolute stud gold glove defense in CF. Elite arm. Elite speed. The first and most elite 5-tool player the game has seen. All during an era of actual high level competition. No shade to Babe Ruth but it’s really hard to put him as the GOAT when he played during the segregated era. We know that elite competition was stuck in the Negro league during Ruth’s time so he straight up didn’t face the best of the best. Jackie, Doby, Campanella, Newcombe all proved that the Negro league had elite talent. It’s not his fault, but I’m not gonna think that some dude who didn’t face the best baseball players on earth is the GOAT.

There will never be another Shohei Ohtani. And that’s because you have to be really good at both to make worthwhile. If Ohtani was great at hitting/pitching but just mediocre (by MLB standards) at the other thing, it’s not worth it for the team to use him at both. The team is better off using a different average hitter/pitcher instead because it’s grueling over the long run to do both. Plus if you get hurt doing the averaging hitting/pitching, then you lose the great pitcher/hitter. Why risk it? Get an average player instead for that role, since it’s not worth the risk. And IIRC Ohtani in his entire career, pushed for doing both. During his NPB days, he chose his team because they’d let him play both. He chose the Angels because they were most accommdating about playing both. They’ll never be another Ohtani.
