I’m not surprised by this considering the sheer number of Shohei Ohtani advertisements all over Japan as well. He’s pretty much king there.

The “Shohei Ohtani shell corporation” is such an apt way to describe it lol.

”… Who happens to run a baseball team”. Honestly, it’s a win win situation and win a few championships.

Ohtani has increased Dodgers franchise value by over 2 billion dollars past few years. Dodgers are making millions of dollars annually from Advertisements from Japanese corporations. MLB are making tens of millions of dollars from Ohtani each year.

I’m sure Ohtani had the Dodgers as his preferred choice already. But that’s largely due to the culture the Dodgers built and had already established for a while prior to him joining the Dodgers. But he’s the type of unicorn player, international cash cow, and revenue generator that all 30 teams should’ve been all in on and made the best possible effort to land even if they were unsuccessful. Whatever crazy salary you pay him, you’re going to make that back and then make a whole lot more on top of that. Like I’ll give the blue jays credit for making a strong push for him even though they were unsuccessful because that’s what every other team should’ve been doing. All the teams complaining about how they don’t make money (they’re full of shit on that claim) would’ve saw a significant return on their investment while the net worth of their franchise increased in the process. No guarantee he would’ve signed with them. But you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take and if money is an issue like some of these teams claim. Not even making an attempt to pursue the guy who could’ve made their organization tons of money is mind blowing to me.

I remember reading an article a couple of years ago (sorry, forgot the source) that said Ohtani has always wanted to be a dodger since his days in Japan but the NL didn’t have a DH at the time and he wanted to hit as well so he joined an AL team.
