I notice Tyler Glasnow does it a lot. In fact, last time I watch the Glasnow outing - it felt like he wanted to challenge every pitch. I’m just waiting for the time when one of the umpires mistakes a Glasnow hat adjustment for “the Pitcher is challenging the pitch… it was called a Ball” accidentally.

This is a bad propaganda. Batters are allowed 1 timeout per at bat. I have never seen Ohtani tying his shoe between every pitch. In fact, he only uses a timeout when he gets 2 strikes on him.
If you are talking about when he is pitching, he is allowed to do whatever as long as he doesnt go past the pitch clock.
Edit: this was weird. Ohtani is definitely a unicorn in that I have to justify both sides.

I was referring to when he pitched. I was being dramatic with every pitch but in an early inning when he last pitched against the Jays, they werent starting the pitch clock until he finished tying his shoes. Happened 3-4times that inning.
Edit: adding that pretty sure it was the same inning the dodgers catcher, Smith, needed a new glove.

I’m still confused why the 1st pitch of the game was challenged. It wasn’t even close. BUT EVEN if it was close to being a strike, surely a 0-0 count with no one out is the LOWEST leverage situation - you have to be 100% certain of an overturn to challenge that?
I mean there’s 3 possibilities right?
a) Will Smith mistook Ohtani touching his cap as Ohtani wanting to challenge, so Will Smith did it
b) Will Smith genuinely belived it was a clear strike 100%
c) Will Smith thought it was very likely a strike e.g. with 70% certainty
What do you think was the case?

While that individual call was low-leverage, I could see a bigger tone-setting reason to challenge the first pitch. It could help establish the bottom part of the zone for the rest of the game. The flip-side, and what we saw, is that it’s a big deal to lose a challenge on the first pitch of the game, so it’s probably not something we will see again this year.

I always find it weird that tapping your hat or helmet is the signal to request a challenge. I mean most players tap their hats or helmets all the time, granted normally only once.
But can’t they come up with a different signal like a clear hand gesture that has to be deliberate to show?
